DGNB

Responsibility is not only about visions. It is also about actions that can be measured and documented. In Denmark, the DGNB certification (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Nachhaltiges Bauen) has become an important and holistic benchmark for responsible construction. The certification system evaluates and rewards buildings that meet high standards for environmental, economic, and social sustainability.

Specifically, it is a holistic system that assesses the entire life cycle of a building – from the materials used and energy consumption to indoor climate and recycling. The certification is based on a points system, where projects are evaluated according to specific criteria that vary depending on the building type and scope of the project. The result is a classification of either silver, gold, or platinum, which clearly documents the level of responsibility.

DGNB certified buildings

Our brick products play an important role in DGNB-certified buildings, positively contributing to a range of key areas. Firstly, bricks have impressive durability and require minimal maintenance, which reduces both costs and environmental impact over time. Products such as ReClay and ReClaimed integrate recycled materials, supporting DGNB’s focus on resource efficiency. Additionally, bricks contribute to a healthy and comfortable indoor climate with excellent insulation and moisture-regulating properties. Finally, our work with Low GWP Bricks allows us to provide materials that reduce CO₂ impact right from the start of a project.

Whether you are in the planning phase, at the start, or midway through a project, we are ready to advise you on the optimal use of our products. We offer documentation and guidance to help ensure that your construction meets DGNB requirements and achieves the highest standards of responsible building.

EPD

When responsibility has to be more than just an ambition, it requires action. Here, environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) play a crucial role. It provides a detailed insight into the environmental impact of our bricks throughout their life cycle, creating transparency in construction projects where responsibility is at the top of the agenda.

At Randers Tegl, we have had EPDs for all our bricks since 2018. This means, that as a developer, architect, or consultant, you can integrate precise data into your calculations and ensure that your projects meet the highest standards of environmentally responsible building.

Bricks make a difference

One of the most environmentally friendly building materials is brick, and our EPDs highlight several key areas where bricks make a difference. Our clay pits are restored as farmland, ensuring a responsible use of nature's resources. Bricks contain no harmful substances and can safely be used both indoors and outdoors without health risks. With paving bricks, rainwater can be managed more efficiently, reducing the pressure on drainage systems and supporting sustainable water management. Last but not least, tiled roofs make it possible to collect rainwater for reuse, which adds extra points in sustainability calculations.

At Randers Tegl, we are proud to provide documentation that makes it easier for you to build responsibly. Our EPDs offer transparency and peace of mind, so you can focus on creating future buildings with the smallest possible footprint.

.

LCA

When we talk about sustainable construction, it is important to look at the big picture – from start to finish. This is exactly what an LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) does. LCA is a tool that assesses the total environmental impact of a building throughout its life cycle: from raw material extraction and production of building materials to construction, use, maintenance, and finally demolition or recycling.

At Randers Tegl, we see LCA as a natural extension of our work to create materials that combine quality, design, and responsibility. By combining our products with detailed documentation such as EPDs, we ensure that you as a developer, architect, or consultant have the necessary data to optimise your project – both economically and environmentally.

A circular construction industry

The construction industry is responsible for a significant portion of global CO₂ emissions and resource consumption. With an LCA, you can gain an overview of the largest impacts throughout a building's lifecycle and obtain a concrete basis for reducing them. By incorporating materials like bricks, which can be recycled, the lifecycle of resources is extended, supporting a circular construction industry. With data from EPDs, LCA analyses can become more accurate, avoiding the generic values that often overestimate environmental impact. LCA is a vital part of several certification systems, such as DGNB, where the overall environmental impact is weighed against sustainability criteria.

Here, bricks play a central role. They are an ideal choice for LCA calculations, as the material is not only durable but also has a long lifespan, recyclability, low maintenance requirements, and is produced responsibly with lower energy and resource consumption.

GWP

Today, GWP (Global Warming Potential) is a central measurement tool in the construction industry – especially for us. Specifically, GWP measures how much CO₂-equivalent a material emits throughout its lifecycle and is thus an indicator of the material's impact on the climate. Our products, such as ReClay, ReClaimed, and EcoBlend are developed with a focus on this very aspect. Their low GWP provides an environmentally responsible solution that not only reduces CO₂ emissions but also contributes to creating buildings with consideration for the future – generation after generation.
