Our vision

The construction industry faces significant challenges regarding resource consumption and environmental impact. It leaves a considerable mark on the environment both during the construction phase and throughout a building’s lifecycle. However, we believe the industry has the potential to become far more responsible. And we have an obligation to contribute to that transformation.

Our vision is to become the most responsible and environmentally friendly producer of clay-based building materials. This ambition drives our daily efforts towards a more efficient and circular approach to producing our products. We aim to integrate the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals into our construction projects. It’s a long-term process, but one we are firmly committed to continually improving and refining.

Our initiatives

Responsibility is not just about visions but also about actions that can be measured and documented with complete transparency. We have taken concrete steps to reduce our climate footprint and ensure the responsible production and development of our bricks.

ENERGY TARGETS AND POLITICAL AGREEMENTS

  • We support the Danish government's goal of a 70 % reduction by 2030 compared to 1990.
  • We comply with the government’s energy optimisation requirements for businesses.

PRODUCED USING CO2-NEUTRAL RESOURCES

  • We use exclusively CO2-neutral electricity from wind turbines.
  • We rely solely on green, renewable energy from Danish wind farms.
  • We utilise a combination of natural gas and biogas.
.

RESOURCE OPTIMISATION

  • We use excess heat from kilns in drying chambers.
  • We recycle all types of waste generated during production.
  • We create mortar pockets in bricks to reduce the mass that needs firing, thereby lowering the CO2 footprint per brick.

LIGHTING

  • We have replaced all lighting with LED and utilise natural daylight where possible.

WASTE SORTING AND RECYCLING

  • We actively focus on waste sorting and send materials for recycling.
  • We purify and reuse water in production, including surface water.
  • We use pallets exclusively within a return system.

A story about clay

Brick has been a cornerstone of construction for millennia. As a natural material found deep within the earth, it has been used not only for buildings but also as a carrier of history and culture. It is a material that honours a long-standing tradition while looking ahead to a sustainable future.

Brick is the result of a timeless process where clay, sand, and heat combine with a shared purpose – to create durable, healthy, and functional buildings. Determining the exact lifespan of bricks is difficult, as some of the oldest structures built with brick still stand today. This extraordinary longevity is a testament to brick's ability to withstand the test of time and its role in creating lasting structures.

A process respecting nature

At Randers Tegl, we strive to secure clay resources as close to our plants as possible. The clay has been formed over millions of years and, in Denmark’s case, was deposited by meltwater from the Norwegian and Swedish mountains during the last Ice Age. Therefore, clay is a unique resource that cannot be recreated once it has been removed. For this reason, it is crucial to extract the clay resource with consideration for ensuring its availability for many generations to come.

The clay is typically found just beneath the topsoil and possesses unique properties that make it ideal for brick production. The extraction is carried out with great respect for nature and only in locations where it can be done in harmony with other considerations, such as landscape, environment, wildlife, groundwater, and neighboring communities. During the extraction process, the topsoil is carefully removed, and the clay is transported to our plants for processing.

Afterward, we either restore the land for agricultural use or repurpose it for natural conservation. This practice ensures that the entire process is conducted with the greatest possible respect for the surrounding environment and often contributes to increased biodiversity, new habitats for wildlife and plants, as well as recreational value. This is our way of "giving back" to the local community while considering a global sustainability perspective.
